Mr. Charlie I. Portis
Charlie Irwin Portis, son of the late Joe and Lee Virginia Portis. He was born October 15, 1957 in Evergreen, Alabama. He died peacefully at the V.A. MICU in Birmingham, Alabama Monday, December 30, 2019. Charlie was preceded in death by siblings: Tony Portis, Joe Portis and Virginia A. Portis.
Charlie started his spiritual journey at Milledgeville A.M.E. Zion Church where he served faithfully under the leadership of Reverend Jeffery L. Davis. He later joined Pleasant Grove A.M.E. Zion Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Dorothy D. Davis. Charlie faithfully served as a steward, trustee, and Superintendent of Sunday School.
Charlie was educated at Evergreen High School. After high school he joined the United States Army and retired after serving 20 years. He was employed at Wal-Mart, he worked as a security guard, Department of Corrections, and Presley-Fluker Funeral Directors.
Charlie leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 22 years, Sister Tanya D. Portis; four sons, Tereko D. Portis (Ebony) of San Antonio, TX, Termaine D. Portis (Sharmika) of Killeen, TX, and Courtenay A. Portis of Montgomery, AL, Prentice M. Salter of Lubbock, TX and Price M. Salter (Savannah) of Evergreen, AL; one daughter, Artascia L. Portis; siblings, Lillie Ruth Portis, Eva Nell Portis, both of Birmingham, AL, Adella (Claudio Ray) Henry of Pensacola, FL and Willie J. Portis of Evergreen, AL.
He also leaves 19 grandchildren; one uncle, John Albert McCreary; one aunt, Ida McCreary; two sisters-in-law, Leslyn (Elijah) Travis of Evergreen, AL, Sharon Williams of Opelika, AL; one brother-in-law, Christopher Watts of Evergreen, AL; a devoted mother-in-law, Lillie M. White; father-in-law, Richard White; father-in-law, Charlie H. Watts of Detroit, MI and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family of the late Charlie I. Portis wishes to express our sincere gratitude, appreciation and thanks to all of our friends and loved ones. Whether it was a visit you made that comforted us, a telephone call that consoled our hearts, food you prepared, or a prayer you prayed that strengthened us.
