Mr. Robert J. Robbins, Sr.
Robert was born on January 8, 1954 in Owassa, Alabama to the late parents Susie Mae Thompson and Willie D. Robbins, alongside his sisters; the late Allie Dee, Sadie Mae, his surviving sisters, Ella Mae Thompson, Shirley and Sharon Robbins. Robert was the only boy out of all his siblings.
Robert would later move to New York, accompanying his sisters Allie and Ella Mae where he would become one of the most influential people in South Side Queens, New York. In New York Robert was also known as “Country”. He was more reputable known for being able to create successful establishments, such as Carmichaels’ Restaurant, the Car Wash and a nightclub, to name a few.
Robert enjoyed getting together with his family every year, or as often as he could. He will always be known for being stern, yet caring, and nurturing at the same time. He enjoyed cooking – and was great at it! He adored his family, telling jokes, reading his Bible, and making fun of his sisters, out of pure fun, because he adored them. He loved telling stories about their childhood. Robert was a man who had many names, “Rabbit, Country, and Brother”. However, one name for certain he earned, was a “Protector”.
Robert is survived by his sisters, Ella Thompson, Shirley, and Sharon Robbins; his brother-in-law, Terrance and his children, Mark, Robert, Donovan, Gabriel, and Marcus. He also leaves behind a number of grands and great grands; his uncle, Roy Thomas, and a host of nieces, nephews, and many friends.
On January 19, 2019, surrounded by his loved ones, Robert went on to continue his journey, not in the physical sense, but in the spiritual sense. One of the worries he had before he left, was his family. Wanda, his niece, reassured him; however, that we’ll all be okay as she along with his son, Robert, and nephew, Polo, comforted him as he took his final breath.
We, the family of Robert James Robbins, extend our heartfelt appreciation for the many acts of love, kindness and sympathy shown to us during this time of bereavement. We pray that God will continue to bless and keep each of you.
