Gaybelle, as many called her, was a long time member of Centennial No. 1 Baptist Church, serving as a missionary, choir member and Sunday school teacher faithfully. She was a female associated with the DAV, served as a Poll Worker for over twenty years, a very adovacate for Voter Registration and the Advancement of Colored People. She worked diligently until she became disabled.
She will be sadly missed by seven children, Georgia (Red) Cunningham, Willie G. Locke, Gregory Locke, Debra (Gene) Williams, Warren (Dawn) Locke, Judy Locke and Wayne Locke. She also leaves three siblings: Magdalene January, W. T. January and Murry January; fifteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; two aunts: Ida Mae Lee and Christine Paige and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
From the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, State Department of Alabama. We are deeply sorry to hear of the passing of our Comrade Gaybelle Locke. She was a dedicated worker and supporter of our disabled veterans and their families. We know she will be greatly missed by her family. But hold true that we as Auxiliary members we will always remember her true devotion that she had for our Auxiliary.
We will light a candle in her memory of service and devotion, in the memorial service that will be held at our upcoming Mid-Winter Conference, in January, to be held in Auburn, Alabama. Again the family will be uplifted in our prayers for strength to carry them through this time of sadness.
