Ms. Shirley Harris
The world was blessed with Mrs. Shirley Louise Willis Harris on August 22, 1952. She was born to Willie and Pearlie Mae Willis in Mobile, Alabama. The family lived there for a few years until her mother relocated to Evergreen, Alabama. Shirley grew up in Evergreen with her mother and step-father, Isiah Bryer and attended Conecuh County Schools. She graduated from Evergreen High School in 1971. She was popular among her classmates. Immediately after graduating from Evergreen High School, she relocated to Pensacola, Florida, for a short time where she attended Florida State College. Due to her aging parents, she settled back in Evergreen, Alabama, where a blossoming courtship with Wayne Harris began. Later, they married on June 2, 1973. This union was blessed with five beautiful children: Kerrie, Christie, Dwayne, Tessie, and Vanessa. She continued to work for a while. Later, she realized her greatest contribution to her home was to be a loving care-giver to her children and a loving wife. She loved life and enjoyed spending time with her family. She was truly an “angel” sent from Heaven.
She confessed Christ at an early age, and joined The Old Field African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and later joined The Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (both of Evergreen, AL), where she remained a member until her untimely death. She had strong Christian values and raised her children to have the same. Shirley taught her children the importance of an education and to be the best that they could be in life. She never knew the meaning of the words “I Can’t”; instead, her words were “I’ll try” and “When one door closes God opens another”. Shirley was a beautiful person and was always full of joy and laughter. Her quiet disposition exemplified a true woman of grace and virtue. She loved her brother and being the loving big sister, she began supporting him in his ministry and all that he endeavored to do. Thus, fulfilling the role her mother had done.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Wayne Harris; four lovely daughters, Kerris Harris, Christie (Melvin) Armstrong, Tessica (Jerrel) Packer, and Vanessa Harris all of Montgomery, AL; one loving son, Dwayne (Tameka) Harris of Montgomery, AL; six grandchildren (Jasmine and Melvin Armstrong, Jr., John and Angel Johnson, and Darren and Darrius Harris); one devoted brother Rev.
